3 WAYS TO CREATE KITCHEN LIGHTING AND 2024 KITCHEN LIGHTING TRENDS
KITCHEN LIGHTING
Today I have been on the look out for some Kitchen examples with good lighting. I was looking for drama but also function and also may be general lighting! I was also looking for ways to wash the backsplash with indirect lighting which highlighted the tiles or stone features and well as created a Focal Point.
Lighting in Kitchen now serves so many different purposes and the way lighting is designed it now has become a work of art either the light fixture itself or the element in the room it lights up!
I found few examples to share of some very interesting applications of lighting in Kitchen. What I found is that Lighting in the Kitchen can be either fit to the space or fit to the individual using the space.
This Kitchen above from DB Studio in Singapore is lighted very well for task lighting. But instead of Direct Light falling on your task counter top, the light is fit under the upper cabinets and made to wash the wall of the backsplash.
That serves 3 purposes:
It highlights the beautiful veining on the stone backsplash and counter which is a design & architectural feature.
It lights up the whole counter and allows the person standing there doing a task to be able to see clearly what he/she is doing.
The light that illuminates the surface and the general area is coming from the Indirect Source that is not affecting the person as a glare or the light not hitting the eyes directly OR casting any shadows!

Lighting in the kitchen can be a very personal choice. Some may want their kitchen to be brightly lit at all times but others may want drama & mood. So The Design of Lighting in the Kitchen is a very important aspect that may make or break the design of your kitchen.

You may have the top of the line kitchen with beautiful finishes and top of the line appliances and cabinet features. But if the lighting does not speak to the beauty of that kitchen then it can surely be a failure!

As a Designer I have laid a lot of importance to proper lighting for the kitchen and educated my clients to think about lighting in a very special way. You cannot have enough lights. But if you don’t have more than enough then that’s a problem which you will face as you start using the kitchen. You will find yourself to needing more illumination or brightness to complete a task properly. You may even find yourself to be working in the shadow of your own body - specially in the sink.
May be you are already facing some challenges in your current kitchen with inappropriate lighting! And hence it is time to think about refreshing the lighting for your kitchen.
As a Designer, I have the ability to do some planning for your lighting -
I do Lighting Design where I make a lighting plan for your Kitchen, show wiring diagram, choose fixtures for you. We then have a Certified Electrician come in, hold a discussion with the plan in hand, he/she will look at your Power Board and check all the lines and then we may make some edits to the Lighting Plan. There after I revise the plan and followed by the Electrician doing his/her job. the lights fixtures are ordered and he/she can install them for you.
3 Ways to create Beautiful Kitchen Lighting:
Wash - A beautiful backsplash tiled wall can be washed with a strip light close to it.
Highlight - You can highlight one particular feature in the kitchen like the counter space with wide pendants.
Direct - Directional Lighting can be created by recessed pots in the ceiling or a track

This picture below shows all 3 types of lighting mentioned above. You can see how the under cabinet lighting washes the backsplash creating beautiful brightness. The inside cabinet lighting highlights the artwork and the Ceiling recessed lights as well as the Island pendants are direct lighting ideal for doing tasks like counter-top food prepping, doing different tasks around the kitchen and also light for visibility.

3 Things to avoid with Kitchen Lighting:
Shadows - This can be created by placing light source behind people’s heads when they are standing doing a task.
Wrong focus - Sometimes we see that a light source is so close to a cabinet door that looks like it’s meant to focus on the counter but missed by few inches and that light does not do its task
Uneven scallops - when light overlaps on a wall or a cabinet surface, and the scallops are not uniform. It takes away the elegance

This farmhouse kitchen has been lighted very well even with the challenge of high vaulted ceiling. Ceiling recessed lights have been placed strategically so as to get maximum output from them.
Long chains on pendants over islands make sure that the lights are at the required height above the island.
Finally the under cabinet lighting gives light at the lower level which is the counter. All 3 modes of lighting is working in unison specially because of the reflected light that falls on the crown molding.
